About Marketing, Advertising & Sales - A Fish Story

Marketing, advertising and sales processes overlap and intertwine.  Nevertheless, they must be separately understood and correctly used for the best return on "advertising dollars."

Marketing is all about information.  It seeks to learn about the opportunities that exist within a particular demand segment.  It also keeps track of a business's efforts to maintain its current clients and gain additional clients.  Marketing is the information that makes advertising smart.  Knowing that there are no fish in mud puddles is marketing; not fishing in them is smart advertising.  Sadly, many businesses fish in mud puddles.  Catching nothing, they conclude that advertising is a waste of money and they quit.  The smart ones realize that somewhere, somehow, fish are being caught and they seek to learn the information that will produce fish.  That’s marketing.  Before long, they learn where the fish are and the best bait to use for the particular fish they want.  That's also marketing.  Then they go after the fish.  That's advertising.  They pay attention to what works and what doesn't.  That's marketing.  They adjust their presentation based on marketing information.  That's advertising.  Eventually they get a fish on the line.  That's sales.  Then they learn that a fish must be finessed into the net.  That's sales.  The smart ones study how the fish behaves on the line.  Those who want to live by eating fish, learn to repeat the best practices that put fish into the net.  That's advertising.  Those who go on to become masters at fishing have also become masters in marketing, advertising and sales.
